Rajini, Big B to descend on Goa tomorrow

PANJIM: Mega stars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth will share the stage with Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Union MoS for I&B Rajyavardhan Rathore at the inaugural of the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) which opens on Thursday. The festival will open with a glittering function at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium with its new acoustics, and will have evergreen actor Anupam Kher and actress Raveena Tandon as anchors.Huge cut-outs of Rajinikanth in his superhero costume have been placed at strategic locations at the entrance to the city with hectic preparations on to get everything ready for the inaugural.Rajinikanth, literally a demigod in the south, will be presented a Special Centenary Award for his contribution to cinema during the festival while megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be the special guest for the inauguration ceremony.The country focus this year will be on China and plans to release Indian films in that country are slowly being fructified. Celebrated Chinese director Wong Kar Wai will be conferred Lifetime Achievement Award. Special tributes are also being planned for deceased film stalwarts such as Richard Attenborough, Robbie Williams, Zohra Sehgal, Suchitra Sen, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Farooq Sheikh and AK Nageswara Rao, while a retrospective of this year’s Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Gulzar, will be yet another draw. Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ will mark the inauguration of the public screening of films at D B Bandodkar stadium, near Kala Academy.“Over the years, IFFI has emerged as a major event on the international cinema calendar. Undoubtedly, this festival has proved to be a significant platform for Indian cinema enabling it to emerge as a distinct genre in world cinema,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a message to the festival organizers. “By showcasing films in different languages and from diverse cultures, IFFI contributes to the important task of breaking boundaries between nations and cultures,” Modi’s message said.
