The patrao from Ponda will be a stronger power center

PANJIM: As Manohar Parrikar and Sudin Dhavlikar sat as invitees at the Campal ground, to witness the mammoth Tripurari Poornima festivities on Thursday evening, where just two politicians were invited, the PWD minister had a smile on his lips. With Manohar Parrikar’s exit from Goa, he is completely in position to enter into a lot more political space which could be disproportionate to the number of MLA’s the MGP has in the state. The Dhavlikar brothers bloom whenever there is a rumbling, a power shift and shine brightly when there is a political crisis. While Parrikar’s move to Delhi isn’t quite a crisis, but it certainly marks a power shift. Irrespective of who the next BJP chief minister of Goa is, Sudin Dhavlikar will have an edge in power play. While the MGP and the BJP will continue to remain as allies, it will be far easier for the MGP to initiate its process of consolidation, in the absence of Parrikar than it ever was during his tenure. The BJP and the MGP, inspite of being allies have been at loggerheads on two key issues- the increase in the Sopo tax for Ponda shopkeepers and the beautification of the Kranti maidan. The MGP had opposed the former and supported the latter, with the BJP taking the opposite stand in each of the cases. Meanwhile even though the MGP supported the amendments to the Goa tenancy act, the MGP as a party has opposed it. “Yes our workers have opposed it”, said Dhavlikar to Herald. The MGP has strongly indicated that while they will do nothing to upset the apple cart for the remaining of the term, they might foreclose their relationship to a total of five years rather than the ten year marriage that they had promised. Dhavlikar said ‘yes earlier, we had said that the BJP MGP alliance would last for ten years. After these developments, I would say let us look at five years- meaning end of this term”. Asked why was there a change of heart he said “So many things may crop up”It’s clear that Dhavlikar is playing his cards well and is telling the BJP that the MGP fixed deposit may last half of what the BJP had envisaged. That may not be good news for the BJP.Early divorceThe MGP has strongly indicated that while they will do nothing to upset the apple cart for the remaining of the term, they might foreclose their relationship to a total of five years rather than the ten year marriage that they had promised Herald Goa News
