60-year bar set for new state BJP chief

Indicating that the new state Bharatiya Janata Party
president would be unanimously elected from the ‘younger lot’ in the party,
state BJP president Vinay Tendulkar on Monday said that this would be done as
per the guideline of the central leadership of the party.

“The new state president of the BJP will be in place by
December 15, 2019,” he added.

Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Tendulkar said that as
per the direction of the party’s central leadership, the new state BJP
president will have to be a party person below 60 years of age.

“Presently, we have a number of active party-men at the
local level like Sadanand (Tanavade), Narendra (Sawaikar) and Damu (Naik), who
fit into this criteria,” he observed.

The state BJP president also informed that presently
consultations are on with party workers as regards the new state president of
the party. “We will also have to talk to the central leadership of the party
about the same,” he added, pointing out that the entire consultation exercise
would end soon.

Tendulkar, who is also the Rajya Sabha MP from

Goa, said that in order to elect the state president of
the party, at least 50 per cent of the party’s committees at the electoral
constituency level as well as district level should be in place, that is
party’s committees in at least 20 electoral constituencies and in at least one
district must be elected.

“I am hopeful that by the time state BJP president is
elected, we will have our party’s new committees in at least 30 to 32 electoral
constituencies as well as in at least one district in place,” he maintained.

BJP sources hinted that Damodar Naik is the hot favourite
for the post of the BJP state president.

Naik, who has been the president of the Bharatiya Janata
Yuva Morcha (Goa unit) in the past, and was the two-time member of the Goa
legislative assembly, is currently the state general secretary as well as the
local spokesperson of the party.
