Attendance in colleges should not be mandatory, said TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai on Saturday. Sardesai said that University and colleges are not jails to frame rules for students, but should be accountable in providing solutions to daily and complex issues.
Sardesai was addressing a gathering as the chief guest for the inaugural function of Parikrama 0.1 festival at Mardol. Also present were Goa University’s vice chancellor Varun Sahani, Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude, local sarpanch Mangaldas Gaude, panch Varadh Mardolkar and others.
Sardesai said that the executive committee of Goa University should conduct a study on eliminating compulsory attendance so that it could also be followed in other colleges in the country.
On Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s statement that around 60 lakh tourists visit the state every year, Sardesai said that there is a need to conduct a survey and find out how many Goans are benefiting from the tourism sector.
In order to bring education closer to tradition and culture, our education system needs to be changed from the school level, said Vice Chancellor Varun Sahani. Culture should not be kept in the museum for appreciation, but it should bring in social change and development, said Sahani.
