Calangute VP to hold special gram sabha to discuss plastic ban

Calangute: Shortage of staff at the Calangute Village
Panchayat and annual statement of accounts were the issues raised in the Sunday
gram sabha which was held at the panchayat hall at Calangute.

Due to the code of conduct no major development issues
could be discussed at the Calangute gram sabha. The turnout at the gram sabha
was poor and the development proposals put forth by the villagers were all
rejected.

The Calangute sarpanch Shawn Martins welcomed the gram
sabha which started at 11 am followed by the panchayat clerk reading out the
minutes of the previous gram sabha. He later presented the annual statement of
accounts for the year 2018-19. The opening balance was showed as Rs 10,53,46,093
and closing balance at Rs 11,99,60,809.

Anthony D’Souza raised the issue of writing to the
government to provide additional staff for the village panchayat as there are
long queues seen in the panchayat due to shortage of staff.

The Calangute sarpanch Shawn Martins said that the
village panchayat has written to the directorate of panchayats and even to the
government to change some bylaws of the panchayat so that the local body can
act on sewage release in the open and garbage issues.

As there was no other matter to be discussed the gram
sabha ended at 11.30 am and the deputy sarpanch proposed the vote of thanks.

The sarpanch made an announcement that next Sunday the
village panchayat will be holding a special gram sabha to discuss a proposal to
ban plastic as per the order of the NGT.
