Getting into the row over the domination of the Margao wholesale fish market by outsiders, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Monday demanded 95 per cent reservation for Goans at the proposed wholesale fish market saying that Goans are not allowed to do business at the present wholesale market.
Addressing a press conference in the city, he recalled that during his tenure as a PWD minister of
the Digambar Kamat government he had warned not to allow ‘outsiders’ to monopolise the fish trade.
Alemao said that he had even proposed the names of some Goans to do business at the market but they were not registered then with the market association.
The fish brought into Goa from other states through trucks should be first tested by the FDA before it is sold in Goan markets, he said, seeking 95 per cent reservation for Goans at the proposed new wholesale fish market.
The recent ‘formalin-in-fish’ row is a matter of grave concern as Goans have been forced to go without fish, he said.
