A spot of iron bars that lie exposed of the railway over bridge near the railway community hall in Vasco has given rise to a serious concern among the people, given the fact that the bridge lacks proper maintenance.
As per information, the over bridge was repaired some years ago after water seepage problem cropped up. Hundreds of vehicles, including two and four wheelers, pass below the over bridge. However, restrictions have been laid for heavy vehicles by erecting iron bars on either side following incidents of damage caused to the bridge when such vehicles attempted to pass below it.
Commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, often take refuge below the rail over bridge during heavy rains. Regular commuters say that it is a matter of worry as the underneath portion of the over bridge can deteriorate further and result in a tragedy. They say that the authorities will have to do something about it immediately before any life is lost.
The locals have demanded that the South Western Railway authorities should initiate necessary steps to repair the damaged portion.
The road passing below the over bridge is used by people from Mangor-Hill, Driver’s- Hill, Baina, Belabai, Mestawada, Orulem, Shantinagar, Undir, Varunapuri and other areas.
When contacted station manager of Vasco railway station P C Chacko, he said that nobody has brought to his notice about the over bridge issue. “I will ask the technical experts of South Western Railway to verify the facts,” said Chacko. He further informed that necessary action would be initiated depending on what the technical team has to say.
It may be recalled that with the initiative of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, the problem of waterlogging of the road stretch near the over bridge site was resolved by laying heavy duty pavers designed to withstand vehicle weight some years ago.
