Opposing the proposed multi-modal logistics park in the capital city Panaji, the Congress on Thursday demanded a white paper and asked the allies of the BJP-led government to clear their stand on the project.
The opposition party said that it has been revealed through a written reply in the Lok Sabha that the Centre, in principle, has approved the development of 35 multi-modal logistics parks across the country which includes one in Panaji.
“People of Goa have been kept in the dark about this project by the BJP government; all three MPs have remained mum on this project and have failed to inform the general public. This project has been approved without taking the locals into confidence,” said chief spokesperson of Congress Sunil Khawtankar, while addressing a press conference in Panaji.
He said that this project will put a huge burden on the state’s existing infrastructure including the national highway that passes through the city.
Khawtankar fears that the government might develop a container terminal, which is one of the many requirements for the project, in any eco-sensitive zone and the low-lying area of the city and said the government should mention areas identified for the development of the proposed park.
“The government ought to come out with the details of the project. Will it also explore waterways to ferry containers through the heritage route of Panaji and Ribandar causeway? It also has to tell the people as to how many jobs would be created through this project for Goans,” he said.
He asked the government to also give details about the quantum of state-owned land that has been given to the central government for different development projects.
Khawtankar further asked the BJP and its allies to come out clean on this project and clear their stand before the people of Goa and said that the Congress will be writing to Governor Mridula Sinha seeking clarification on the project.
