Cong hits out at govt over plan to import coconuts

PANAJI: All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Girish Chodankar has said that it is ridiculous that the government has to import nuts of the state tree from a foreign country.
Prices of coconut have shot up in the state over the last few months and there are no signs of them coming down.
Chodankar was referring to the statement made by the Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai that the state will import coconuts from Sri Lanka to arrest rising prices of coconuts in the state.
He also wondered whether importing coconuts was a ploy to convert entire ‘coconut groves’ into ‘settlement areas’ under proposed regional plan and new planning and development authorities (PDAs).
Chodankar has also claimed that Sardesai and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar have plans to convert vast tracts of land in Goa under proposed Regional Plan and newer PDAs.
“They will not spare even the coconut groves,” he has said adding that they are preparing to destroy Goa. Conversion of coconut groves into settlement areas will lead to scarcity of coconuts, which is already staring at Goa.
“It is condemnable that the state government, instead of promoting agriculture is looking at importing coconuts. This is also in stark contradiction to the melodrama played by Goa Forward Party in the state legislative assembly by naming coconut as state tree,” he has added.
“The government has played a cruel joke on the people of the state by announcing import of coconuts,” he said adding that the government appears to have gone back on Goemkarponn. Rather than protecting the coconut tree, which has distinct identity in the state, the government perhaps wants to kill the identity.
