Panaji: Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Kunal has asked the state government to ‘defer’ the payment of the second instalment of Rs 9.24 crore to Vedanta Real Estate Developers, of which Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for Shiroda bypoll Subhash Shirodkar is one of the directors.
“The matter has been deferred till the completion of the poll process and necessary direction has been issued to the concerned department,” said Kunal while speaking to this daily.
The matter pertaining to Shirodkar’s firm was referred to the Election Commission of India (ECI), as the decision could not be taken at the CEO level, as the amount was huge involving public money.
Secretary, Revenue, Nila Mohanan, on March 27, had written to the CEO after receiving a proposal from the South Goa Collector on whether the model code of conduct is applicable for making payment of the second instalment of Rs 9,24,13,307.50 to Vedanta Real Estate Developers represented through its four directors namely Umesh Shirodkar, Satyesh Shirodkar, Amit Shirodkar and Subhash Shirodkar.
The said matter was placed before the screening committee wherein a decision was taken to refer the matter before the CEO.
