Vasco: The feast of St Peter the patron saint of the fisherfolk was celebrated in the port town of Vasco on Monday with traditional fervor.
The parish priest of Desterro Church Fr Anthony Rodrigues offered prayers at the Old Cross Chapel based at Khariwada in the presence of Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association (GFBOA) president Jose Philip D’Souza and various other fishing community members. The parish priest of Desterro Church later on carried the statue of St Peter in a procession from Old Cross Chapel to fishing jetty at Khariwada.
Fr Rodrigues later on sprinkled holy water into the sea and also at the fishing boats involving those of trawlers and canoes which are used by the fishing community members to catch fish in deep waters. The fishing boats were decorated with balloons, coconut palms, flowers and other decorative items.
Fr Rodrigues in his blessing said, “St Peter will bless the fishermen to carry out their daily business activities. The Saint will also protect the fishermen in deep sea fishing. All the fishermen in and around Vasco will be protected by the Saint in times of crisis”.
GFBOA president D’Souza said that during the crisis of COVID-19 all fishermen could not participate in the annual feast. “We offered prayers to St Peter and St Paul to protect all people from the dreaded virus. St Peter and St Paul will always be with the people in times of crisis.”
