Mormugao civic body passes surplus budget of Rs 3.57 cr

Vasco: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) passed a surplus budget of Rs 3.57 crore for the financial year 2020-21 during the council meeting held on Friday. Interestingly, the opposition councillors boycotted the meeting alleging mismanagement in the budgetary provisions by the ruling council.

MMC chairperson Nandadeep Raut presented the budget for
the financial year 2020-21. He disclosed that the budget is
development-oriented with focus on development works in all 25 wards, having
provisions for the staff who are about to retire, upgradation of garbage
treatment plant at Headland-Sada besides other things.

Raut disclosed that the council will get additional funds
from the 14th Finance Commission with the utilisation of Rs 15 crore. “The
council is focusing on development projects,” he said.

He thanked the Minister of Waste Management Michael Lobo
for giving priority to removal of legacy waste from the garbage treatment plant
at Headland-Sada.

“I express gratitude to the Urban Development Minister
Milind Naik, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and ruling council members for their
all-out support to the task of disposal of legacy waste,” Raut stated.

When asked about boycott of the meeting by opposition
councillors, Raut said that “I am not aware why they failed to attend the
meeting. The council had sent notices of the budget meeting well in advance.
They should have remained present for this important meeting.”

Opposition councillor Kritesh Gaonkar alleged that there
are several issues in the budget which was presented by the ruling council on
Friday. “The council is facing several problems as regards funds and release of
salaries of the workers in time. The figures shown in the budget are inflated,”
alleged Gaonkar.
