Panaji: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted a
further time of six weeks to the Goa government for completion of
identification and demarcation of private forests in the state.
The NGT has made it clear that no further extension shall
be granted and this, of course, shall be subject to payment of Rs 50 lakh as
already directed vide order passed on October 8, 2019, and calculation of the
cumulative cost as directed through the order.
The state has been seeking time to submit the report
since December 2018. A green NGO has approached the NGT in the case for
inordinate delay by the government in identifying private forests.
In December 2018, NGT had directed the government of Goa
to ensure that the work of the committee is completed by March 31, 2019, and in
case of failure to do so, it had said a penalty of Rs 10,000 per day
from April 1, 2019 onwards will be paid by the state government, till the
day the committee submits its report.
