NIO to undertake detailed study on state’s wetlands

Panaji: The Goa State Wetland Authority headed by
Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral on Thursday decided to appoint the National
Institute of Oceanography (NIO) to carry out a study of the current situation
of 455 notified wetland sites in the state.

The meeting of GSWA was held at the Secretariat on
Thursday after a gap of 18 months.

Cabral said that though the central government has
notified 455 wetlands in Goa, we need to have a detailed study of these
eco-sensitive water bodies. Thus, the GSWA has decided to appoint NIO as an
agency to carry out a study of the wetlands, he said.

“It will take at least one-year time period for the NIO
to carry out the study. NIO will first carry out study of wetland sites, which
are located in areas other than forests,” he said.

Cabral also said that the issue of Bondvale lake in St
Cruz village was also discussed in the meeting.
