Panaji: Stating that the National Population Register (NPR) alone is going to be a total mayhem of tribal communities in Goa, the Gawada, Kunbi, Velip and Dhangar (GAKUVED) Federation on Thursday maintained that the NPR, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will together strip off the Goan tribals of their land, forest and agricultural rights, besides their voting rights and liberty.
“Most of the tribals in Goa don’t have birth certificate
to prove their citizenship, as they never registered the births in their
families, as also deaths and marriages until the Registration of Births and
Deaths Act, 1969 came into existence,” stated Ramakrishna Jhalmi, the executive
committee member of GAKUVED Federation, adding that as far as tribal population
in Goa is concerned either there are no documents available with them or there
are serious errors in even their basic documents such as Aadhaar card, PAN
card, voter card, passport, ration card and so on.
Addressing a press conference in the city, Jhalmi said
that the tribals of Goa shiver in fear at the fate of their tribal brothers in
Assam, against whom the government plotted for sending them to detention camps.
“The tribals of Goa tremble in uncertainly in case the calamity of NRC falls
upon them,” he
added. The GAKUVED Federation also maintained that the
NPR, NRC and CAA are aimed to facilitate a certain class, with land grab in
pipeline for the likes of Ambani, Adani and Jindal.
Jhalmi said that the GAKUVED Federation will soon launch
taluka-wise agitations against NPR, NRC and CAA, as also organise awareness
campaign in Goan villages where the tribal population resides.
“Today the government, which is supposed to look after our
welfare has challenged our very existence, our citizenship of the country,” he
pointed out. It was further demanded that the Scheduled areas should be
notified in Goa as per Vth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
