PANAJI: All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Girish Chodankar has said that the string of statements by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and his ally, Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai clearly expose ‘bhatkar’ mentality of the state government and ‘neo-rich elites.’
Chodankar was reacting to the statements by Parrikar and Sardesai, which, according to him, are derogatory towards the common people and eulogise the rich and creamy layer.
Taking strong objection to the statements, Chodankar said that the neo-rich elites and the bhatkar mentality of the government was working overtime to deprive earnings of poor people who are depending on domestic tourists.
He said that the domestic tourists use taxis, hire a bike or a car, and eat at small-time restaurants or shacks, adding, the BJP-Goa Forward Party government is anti-poor and, hence, cannot digest the prosperity of the middle and lower-middle class people.
“First it was those who were dependent on mining industry, who faced disaster from this government and now the state government is planning a similar fate for the people from the tourism sector who eke out their living from the low-end tourists,” he said.
Intention of the government behind promoting five-star hotels is clear, said Chodankar and advised the ministers to use good language as it reflects on “us Goans.”
“Sardesai›s statement was at the instance of starred hotel lobby with the entire game plan being to weed out the low-end tourists from the state and encourage high-end visitors who will spend time at casinos and contribute to the five-star hotel industry,” he said.
He said that “if a miniscule section of tourists is misbehaving and acting in an uncivilised way, you can’t paint everyone with the same brush, and insult our fellow Indians, who come to Goa and contribute to our economy.”
Chodankar said it is rueful that this government, which has failed to generate new employment opportunities, is trying to snatch away the existing avenues of earning from the Goans. This is nothing but a conspiracy against ‘Goemkarponn’.
Also taking a dig at Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar over statement on Goan youth being ‘lazy and not hard working,’ Chodankar said that Parrikar has no right to preach on hard work and laziness to the youth of Goa, who have been sacrificing their family life and working outside on the ships and other countries and within India for making their ends meet.
“Parrikar should know that many Goan youth have left Goa to work hard and are working more than 18 hours a day,” he said.
