Police crack down on cannabis cultivation at Candolim


Bringing to light poppy cultivation in the state, the Calangute police arrested two persons for cultivating cannabis plants and booked the owner of the property where the plants had been grown at Arrad-Candolim in Bardez taluka.
The Calangute police said that this is for the first time that a raid has brought to light poppy cultivation in the state, and two persons – Susanta Sahoo (26) and Pravash Salam (20) of Arradi were arrested.
Acting on a tip-off given by reliable sources that cannabis plants had been grown in the property of Lanny Fialho of Arradi-Candolim, the police conducted a raid at the place on Tuesday evening.
The raiding team found that cannabis plants had been cultivated and concealed from public gaze.
The cannabis plants have been seized by the police.
Some hookahs kept in an adjacent room were seized. The room used by the accused was also sealed by the police.
Spilling the beans on the poppy cultivation, the arrested duo told the police that the said plants had been grown by their owner Lanny Filho, who has now been booked by the police.
An offence under Section 20(a)(I) of the NDPS Act, 1985 has been registered in the case.
The seized plants weigh around 10 kg and are worth of Rs 10,00,000.
The two accused have been remanded to two-day police custody by the JMFC.
Fearing arrest, Fialho has moved the sessions court for anticipatory bail.
PSI Sitaram Malik is probing the case under the supervision of PI Jivba Dalvi.
