Power dept yet to complete pre-monsoon maintenance work

Panaji: Even though the pre-monsoon rain has lashed the
state, the electricity department is still busy undertaking the pre-monsoon
maintenance work in some parts of the state.

“The department could not finish the pre-monsoon work in
time because our staffers were deputed on the election duty. We began the work
after they were relieved from the poll duty. The trimming of trees and other
minor work are still in progress,” said chief electrical engineer (CEE) Reshma
Mathew.

Mathew said that the maintenance work in some areas in
the state may continue for the next seven days.

The residents of Bambolim, Alto-Santa Cruz, Porvorim,
Ribander and the Panaji city are irked over the frequent power cuts since
Sunday evening; however, the disruptions in the power supply are of short
duration.

The CEE said that “there was a problem with feeders,
which were found to be faulty,” and added that “the engineers took some time to
address the fault by switching over the power supply through the ring
distribution feeder system.”

She claimed that the power supply was restored
immediately.

“When we witness very heavy rain or strong wind, there is
a high possibility of the overhead lines hitting against each other, which may
lead to short circuit and hence as a precautionary measure sub-stations have to
shut the supply for an extremely short period, otherwise, a major issue could
arise and that may take a substantial amount of time to restore the power
supply,” the CEE

explained.

She urged the people to cooperate with the department
officials and understand the difficulties faced by them.

The CEE further assured that there will be no major
issues with power supply once the pre-monsoon maintenance work is completed.
