The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) has adopted three different strategies for the three assembly constituencies, which are going to witness bypolls on April 23.
President of MGP Pandurang ‘Deepak’ Dhavalikar himself is contesting as the party candidate in Shiroda, while the oldest regional party is supporting Congress candidate Sudhir Kandolkar in Mapusa and the party has now declared its support to an Independent candidate Jit Arolkar in the Mandrem bypoll.
This may probably be for the first time that in Goa’s political history a party has adopted different strategies in different assembly segments.
Addressing supporters at a public meeting in Shiroda on Sunday, senior leader of MGP and former deputy chief minister Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar declared that his party is supporting Arolkar in Mandrem.
“Arolkar is our boy and MGP is supporting him in Mandrem,” Dhavalikar said.
The MGP, which was always considered to be a natural ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has officially declared its support to Congress candidates for both the Lok Sabha parliamentary seats – Girish Chodankar in North Goa and Francis Sardinha in South Goa, besides supporting Congress candidate Kandolkar in the Mapusa bypoll.
Though Sudin Dhavalikar has declared MGP support to Arolkar in Mandrem, a senior functionary of the party told this daily on Monday that the in-principle decision was taken long back. However, a final decision is yet to be taken, as meeting of the central committee could not take place.
Interestingly, MGP workers from Mandrem have been campaigning for Arolkar even before the schedule of bypolls was declared. A local MGP leader Shridhar Mandrekar, his wife and Zilla Panchayat member Shrimat Mandrekar and others are actively working for the Independent candidate.
