The bazaar bandh call given by the Quepem residents in view of the disruption in power supply for more than 24 hours was called off as the electricity department managed to restore the supply.
Transformer failure near Xeldem power sub-station had resulted in the disruption of power supply during the night of Friday in the Quepem town, Ambaulim, Avedem, Xeldem, part of Rivona and other surrounding areas.
As the power supply could not be restored till Saturday morning, the agitated residents of Quepem had marched to the Quepem electricity department office located in the main market and set an old transformer dumped outside the office on fire.
The people were all the more agitated as no official of the electricity department and Quepem mamlatdar attended to their phone calls.
After getting the news of the transformer being set on fire, the DySP and the Deputy Collector, Quepem, rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the crowd.
When contacted, the assistant engineer Mhadevappa attached to Quepem electricity department office admitted that there was power failure due to the non-functioning of one of the transformers.
He said that they tried to restore the power supply by seeking help from the Cuncolim power sub-station, however, it did not work well. Later a new transformer was brought from Margao sub-station office and after its installation and commissioning the power supply was restored, he said.
Speaking to media persons, some prominent persons from Quepem condemned the negligence on the part of the power department. They said that day-to-day household chores are dependent on electrical appliances, and in the absence of the power supply, things go haywire.
“If this is the working of the department now then one can well imagine what would be the state of affairs during the rainy season when there is heavy rain and gusty winds,” they added.
