Report sought on usage of hired vehicles by PWD divisions

Panaji: The office of the Minister for Public Works has
sought a detailed report on usage of hired vehicles by various divisions and
sub divisions of the public works department (PWD).

The news report published by ‘The Navhind Times’, on
September 22, had exposed how the usage of hired vehicles by PWD goes
unchecked.

Taking cognisance of the news report, the PWD Minister’s
office has sought details on usage of these vehicles from each division and sub
division.

As per preliminary report, currently there are 168 hired
vehicles in the public works department. It reveals that PWD division IX,
Fatorda – Margao is on top with 18 hired vehicles followed by 17 vehicles in
division III, St Inez – Panaji. Division XII, Mapusa and XVIII, Ponda has 12
hired vehicles each and division XX, Fatorda- Margao and XXIV, Bicholim has 10
vehicles each.

The public works department has been spending over Rs 10
crore per annum on hiring vehicles for official use. However, it is learnt that
some vehicles are being used for personal use as well by some of the officials.
Sources told this daily that PWD Minister’s office is still awaiting a detailed
report from the department.

Ironically, there was no proper check on usage of these
vehicles for last so many years even as the state economy is in bad condition.
Even in some cases, private vehicles have been hired despite the guidelines
that the department should hire taxis as per requirement.
