MAPUSA: Siolim-Marna villagers demanded action against those encroaching the major district road (MDR) and public spaces falling within the panchayat jurisdiction at the gram sabha meeting which was held on Sunday.
Some committees were constituted at the meeting and members demanded that appointment letters be given to the various committees. Sarpanch Fermina Fernandes assured to provide appointment letters to all committee members.
Amrut Agarwadekar raised concern over the encroachment on MDR road due to which the road has become narrow resulting in traffic congestion. He demanded that the panchayat take action on those who have encroached on public spaces.
Agarwadekar said, “Keeping in mind the increasing population and vehicles in the village, we have to think of the future, hence, the village panchayat should not allow encroachments on the widened area of the road”.
Panchayat secretary Janice Da Costa said that the panchayat along with panch members will be conducting a survey and illegal handcarts and other encroachments will be removed.
On the issue of garbage the villagers demanded that a solution should be worked out to tackle roadside dumping of garbage. The sarpanch informed the members that the state government will be giving the panchayat more funds so that dry and wet collection of garbage can be started in the village.
A gram sabha member questioned the panchayat body why a signboard on the border of Siolim-Marna and Mapusa municipality where heaps of garbage has been dumped has been shifted from its original place.
Panch member William Fernandes said that the village panchayat has written a letter to the land surveyor and Mapusa municipality to demarcate the border. He said that the panchayat is waiting for the authorities to do the same.
Villagers suggested that a fine should be imposed under the garbage act and also filing an FIR on those dumping garbage on the roadside.
During the meeting the audit report for 2017-18 was passed along with the proposed budget for 2019-20 of Rs 1.21
