State shelter homes lack hygiene: Cong

PANAJI: The state-run shelter homes are in bad shape and the inmates are living in ‘unhygienic and pathetic’ condition, Goa Mahila Congress alleged on Friday.
A team of Mahila Congress paid a visit to eight shelter homes across the state over the last three days and it claimed that there are lapses in the personal hygiene and diet of the inmates.
Exhibiting photographs before media, they claimed that during their visit one of the inmates was locked up in a particular room of a shelter home in South Goa and inmates were kept on the bed without mattress.
“We were shocked to see the plight of the inmates; they were kept in a pathetic condition which is inhumane,” said Mahila Congress president Pratima Coutinho while addressing a press conference in Panaji.
She informed that one of the shelter homes was found to be serving proper food with prescribed diet while two of the homes were maintaining proper hygiene of the premises adding, “There were shortcomings in the rest of the homes.”
“Health Minister Vishwajit Rane should pay a surprise visit to shelter homes if he is really interested in knowing the issues faced by the inmates and resolving the same,” Coutinho said.
